We Love Adventure ... But!

May 9, 2024

We are always captivated by stories and scenes of heroes overcoming challenges, whether real or fictional. The spirit of adventure and challenge is within all of us, although it varies from person to person. But the more important question is: Do we want to personally experience such adventures? Certainly not. If I told you a fictional story about a diligent HR employee who wanted to make his employees happy and set off in Riyadh, crossing from east to west on an exciting journey to find special gifts and rewards for his employees, facing many adventures and hardships along the way, like Ibn Fadlan's journey to the land of the Vikings, or Santiago's quest for the hidden treasure. You would definitely enjoy it, especially with the adventure he had on King Fahd Street, when he encountered Sauron from "The Lord of the Rings" searching for the lost ring, along with his greed for that prime commercial spot. Or when he faced Raskolnikov from "Crime and Punishment" at the intersection of Abu Bakr Street and Anas bin Malik Street, lamenting his crime in front of passersby, or when he met Aureliano from "One Hundred Years of Solitude" marching with his defeated army on Al-Thumama Road after his ninth loss, which certainly wouldn't be his last. He finally reaches his destination, but at what cost? His body exhausted, hair grayed, strength waned, and nerves frayed, with the gifts ruined along with his sanity.

A beautiful and highly thrilling story you'd love to watch on TV, hear from a good storyteller friend, or read in our monthly newsletter, but definitely wouldn't want to live through. Why go through all that suffering? Our desire to watch heroes and their adventures is just an escape from reality. In the end, we enjoy watching adventures as a means of entertainment and excitement in our lives, but we don't want to experience them ourselves. That's why we often seek comfort, away from the atmosphere of adventure, hardships, and struggles. We live in neighborhoods with all the amenities and facilities that provide us with comfort and ease in meeting our daily needs. We prefer to live in places with schools, hospitals, shopping centers, and recreational facilities. We buy luxurious and comfortable cars to give us a sense of ease, or we look for a program called "WalaBravo" that makes it easy for us to reward employees without going through those scary adventures. No HR employee would want to meet Sauron, hear Raskolnikov's lament, or witness Aureliano's defeat.
