The Magic Number... 10,000 Steps

March 5, 2024

From the moment I started working as an employee, my physical health began to decline, and along with it, my mental and emotional well-being. Busy with work and paying little attention to the type of food I was eating, my creative abilities weakened, and my zest for life diminished! Those who knew me before work could hardly recognize me afterward. Diagnosis didn't take long; just 14 months later, I realized my condition, the problem that had gripped me and refused to let go. I knew then that there was no escape from a tough and challenging solution; it was time for determination and resolve. I reached for my mobile phone, not to order food or sweets, but to search for health regimes or diets to help me overcome this issue. I began researching and came across various schools of thought until I stumbled upon the "Juice Diet," which appeared in the 1970s and 1980s in America. This diet focuses on consuming only juices along with walking 10,000 steps daily. However, my problem was that I didn't own a juicer, and the juice shop was far from me, so I ignored it and continued searching. Then I found a critical article about the "Atkins Diet," which emerged in the 1970s by Robert Atkins. This diet emphasizes increasing protein intake and reducing carbohydrates, combined with walking 10,000 steps daily. I dismissed it, not because of the critical article, but due to the long moments required to stand before every product, reading the protein and carbohydrate content on the store shelves, which was beyond my endurance. Continuing my search, I found a short video by one of the "wealthy" doctors talking about the "Paleo Diet," focusing on consuming all-natural foods in their original form without chemical processing, along with walking 10,000 steps daily. I liked this diet and researched how to get these natural foods, only to find them expensive and rare, usually ordered from Italy or Argentina. I was hit by the arrows of despair and surrender; none of these were suitable for me except for the 10,000 steps. This magical number that everyone agrees on: health regimes, medical articles, even my phone, and smartwatch celebrate with me when I achieve it. So, I shifted my focus and started researching the secret behind this magical number. What difference does it make between 10,000 and 12,000 steps? My imagination ran wild with peer-reviewed medical articles and global research centers. It was impossible for such widespread consensus unless it was scientifically proven and established. But to my surprise, it turned out to be just part of a marketing campaign conducted in Japan before 1964. At that time, the watch company "Yamasa Tokei" started selling its new device that encouraged walking 10,000 steps daily. It was just a marketing campaign launched from Japan, making this number a cornerstone in health and sports regimes and tech devices. There is no need to discuss the impact of that marketing campaign! So, I returned to my senses, thinking of solutions for my problem, telling myself, "What was spoiled by work, can only be fixed by work." We need to provide treadmills and stationary bikes for exercising during work or hire a skilled chef with three PhDs in nutrition, food chemistry, and steam and grilling cooking techniques. Or provide sports fields for all kinds of sports, with qualified trainers like Sir Alex Ferguson in football or Phil Jackson in basketball. Or offer an application and program to enhance employees' health, monitor their health and fitness behaviors, and care for them as much as attendance and departure, like the Walaa Active app.

So, what is WalaActive?

It is one of the WalaPlus programs, a digital program and technical solution to enhance employees' health and engagement, monitoring their health behaviors in one app that brings together employees. Through it, you can set up sports challenges among them, monitor their health and fitness behaviors, and boost their engagement with each other.

How do I monitor employees' health behaviors?

Simple. You can monitor your employees' health behaviors through a system management page that enables you to track each employee's and each department's behaviors, step counts, and other health indicators.

What challenges can I create?

You can set up any challenge among all employees or even create a challenge between departments, awarding prizes and rewards to employees who exercise regularly.

Are there any ongoing challenges?

Of course! WalaActive challenges never stop, and the prizes are very valuable, available only to WalaPlus customers.
